So I’m irritated today and this post may or may not be politically correct. Okay actually it just probably won’t be at all. Any company that has outsourced their customer service department has absolutely no interest in actual customer service. They care more about cheap labor and having the calls answered. Other than that there is really no point at in calling them, rarely will you get anywhere and if you do it’s probably going to take awhile. Never in my life have I had to say excuse me so many times and just for kicks I would correct their grammar, it’s really fun to confuse someone who barely understands the language that they are speaking. Try it sometime, just say “Didn’t you mean ____?”. They will sit there for a good 5 minutes trying to figure out what you are asking. Oh the joys, but at least I never have to call that company again. Ever. I think that eventually I will be sitting in a house with no phone, no Internet, no electricity and no water if everyone and their brother keeps outsourcing customer service.

So what’s your customer service nightmare?

I’ve heard a lot about this book and I picked it up today. I’ve only made it through the first few pages but so far so good, his picture of India was very similar to my own experience there. Yeah that time when I went there to train people to take my job, in my own defense I figured I was losing my job one way or the other and I may as well get a free trip out of the deal. It’s amazing how much construction is going on there, absolutely amazing. Another thing that struck my eye was Microsoft, it was more like a compound than anything. Several buildings, the only parking garage that I saw in 3 weeks, gated, secured and happy people outside playing cricket in the courtyard. I’m sure tucked away somewhere was a pool, gym and all of the other amenities that people wish and pray for here. If only we were able to accept a salary of $3,500.00 per year to answer phones, and that’s probably shooting high. There were a lot of things I noticed about India that are different from the US, here we are on time to work, and if we aren’t we’re in trouble. There people stroll into work at their leisure with no real consequences, on more than one occasion I heard that there was India time and then there was Hyderabad time. I also noticed a complete lack of work ethic, here we generally go to work to work, get our job done and go home. There work is more of a social hour and if something gets accomplished well then that’s just icing on the cake. And if you ever wondered why you called your phone company and it seemed like you could hear the conversations of every single other customer, well that’s because they sit within probably a foot of each other.

I was. It was amazing to me all of the companies that I’m just going to have to stop doing business with. Harsh? Perhaps. I’m only one person, I get that. But change has to start somewhere. I can’t sit by and support a company that doesn’t want to support it’s customer base. I’ve dropped my cable company (twice) and good customer service to me is when I can understand the person on the other end, yeah that’s horrible I know. There are a lot of things that I don’t understand about this new trend. I get the reasons…it’s cheaper. With all of this cheapness going around with companies that most of us do business with on a daily basis shouldn’t the price of these goods and services also be going down? I’m just sayin’. I hear people complain all of the time that they had to call their (insert service provider here) and it was so frustrating to talk to someone in India who sounded like they were reading a script, and then when low and behold they couldn’t answer the question it had to go to “level 2 technical support” and they still couldn’t answer the question and if they did they couldnt’ be understood. I know it doesn’t happen like that each and every time but poll some friends and family and ask them about their experiences that they have had with India call centers. Let me know what they say. So I am going to embark on a little journey of exploring how America is being outsourced. Feel free to play along and join me. I probably won’t always be politically correct, but I sure will try my best to be factually correct. With the upcoming election I might even get into some politics…maybe.
